“Tamati Coffey. Manawa” is a stylised portrait that evokes an affection of hope to encourage people to believe.

Te Mete was asked to create a piece of Artwork for Tamati’s Labour Campaign in 2014. The piece is deliberately abstracted and simplified in a minimalistic manner. The colours have symbolic meaning:

• Red and White symbolises the Labour political party
• Yellow caramel symbolises the mix of ethnicities
• Navy Blue symbolises Strength.

The word “Manawa” is a maori word, which means

1. (noun) heart (seat of affections). Greeting, Welcome,
2. Manawa Ora (noun) – Hope
3. Toitoi Manawa (verb) To motivate, inspire, encourage, incite
